cootje et barbara: 'SOIT': SILK FROM SOIES de SOIT The close friendship between Cootje Kenemans-Hummelen and Barbara Thomas, resulted in "Soit, silk and other Arts". Both women were inspired by the colors and the textures that could be achieved with silk and brush, ink and paint. Their collaboration has led to a use of silk and silk nuno-felt that is often exciting and exceptional. Their aim is to create something that is timeless and wearable, the emphasis being on art. Influences on their work include the techniques of batik and shibori, resulting in a harmony of texture and color. "Working with silk is the endless search for combinations of colors and shapes, emotions and expressiveness. Silk is an ancient, yet also modern medium" . There is always an element of surprise, as can be seen from the lining of their jackets, coats or hats. In their own studios they work on their designs, often commissioned by private persons and museums. The exhibition of their work shows not only a selection of their many clothes and hats but also the richly decorated fabrics for which they have gained much acclaim. These are definitely collectibles.
